1.0 PREAMBLE:
The city of Onitsha, located east of the Niger River (original nomenclature: Onicha Ado n’Idu), is an ancient kingdom of a very unique Nigerian people that has evolved since the 14th century with a very rich culture and customs strengthened by a clear hierarchy and demarcation of responsibilities. among traditional administrative executives. At the top of these cadres is an Obi whose majesty is based on the capable support and collaboration of various institutions led by chiefs named Ndi-Ichie.
Consequently, the various levels of administration help guide the Obi-in-Council to offer wise advice while providing exemplary participatory democracy that cuts across institutions from socio-cultural backgrounds and other stakeholders such as Agbalanze-Onitsha (for the male gender) , the Otu-Odu (for the female gender), and Age-grade societies.
The compendium of Onitsha’s rich cultural heritage and unique institution of royalty is jealously kept in CONSCIOUS perspective by people who invariably arouse the envy of many today because the alien factors and pressures of modernity today have failed to diminish the importance and respect attached. to the exclusive royalist stool Onitsha.
Therefore, it is not surprising that the indigenous Onitsha always distinguish themselves and take pride in their respective areas of work, no matter where they are. That is synonymous with the lifestyle of someone aware of their heritage and core values. Such a person always strives to stand out from the crowd.
Having said this, it is relevant at this time to relate the prodigious problems of Onitsha to current concerns, especially the subject of this paper: ‘A career beyond the Kingdom of Onitsha’.
2.0 INTRODUCTION:
The choice of this topic was made out of a special passion to positively impart my humble quota to the existing body of knowledge on child and youth development with an emphasis on career. Furthermore, due to the title given to this inaugural magazine from the University of Nigeria Onitsha-Ado Student Association, Enugu campus, I could not help but make an effort to present an article in line with their VISION which in the present circumstance is, in my honest opinion, plausible.
At this point, two questions may come to mind. The first is: what is a career? The second is: what is a career beyond the Onitsha Kingdom?
All right, if you are as curious as I was when I was trying to put together this role. Now let’s try to make some clarifications.
2.1 A CAREER – there are different definitions of the term career ranging from Chambers’ dictionary expressing career as one’s professional life, progress in one’s work or progress in life in general. However, for the purposes of this document, I would prefer to view the race from UNESCO’s perspective as follows:
“The interaction of work roles and other life roles throughout a person’s life
including both paid and unpaid work in an individual’s life. “
The UNESCO definition above suggests that people tend to create career patterns as they make decisions about education, work, family, and other roles in life. Remember that it has been established that, over the years, the Onitsha people have zealously clung to their rich cultural heritage and unique royal institution with a CONSCIOUS perspective that generally influences the interplay of their job roles and other job roles. life to the extent that envy is aroused. in many indigenous no Onitsha.
The use of the term ‘MINDFUL’ is deliberate and pedagogical with a view to extending the word in its alphabetical and adverbial contexts as an enumeration of guard points to inform the choice of a career that will potentially grant prestige, pride and height beyond the limits. boundaries of one’s kingdom. For example, the need that inspired the conceptualization of a life beyond the Onitsha Kingdom can only be satisfied when each young person in Onitsha (both undergraduate and graduate students) is able to consciously participate in the interplay of work roles and other life roles. based on some carefully created career patterns as a result of valid decisions made about education, work, family and even recreational roles.
Being attentive (ly) engaged in the overriding analogy is therefore being able to consistently perform a self-assessment of one’s position in relation to:
- Motivation
- Interests
- Needs
- Petitions
- Future
- Utility
- Learning
- Legacy
- Produce
-
Motivation – this is the underlying force that causes or stimulates an individual to act in ways that would not normally have been apparent. Therefore, it is very important that people put into perspective all aspects of a discipline, course of study, or job role (s) that may be necessary from time to time to stimulate them to do more than they normally would. been evident. In this way, the individual can reach beyond the borders in his career. So as a guide, find below some specific aspects of a job to consider before making a decision:
- Nature of work – This includes the job description, the work schedule, the hours that will be spent on the job, the tools available to use on the job, etc.
- Job Prospects and Advancement: As energetic students and youth, it will not be wise to spend your entire youth climbing the hierarchical ladder of Ranks in any organization. That is why it is important that you know well in advance the number of years you need to work before being promoted. It is also important to know what you need to do at work to facilitate promotion, be it quick or regular.
- Salary and other benefits: Studies have revealed that one of the motivating factors for choosing a job is the economic benefit associated with that job. However, salaries and other benefits are also very important factors to consider.
- Occupational risks: as students, you should know that there is no job that does not have its risks that, by definition, can refer to any danger, difficulty or harassment that a worker faces to the point of representing a threat to the person’s life.
Thus, it can be seen that with most of the guidance points listed above, a student may be better equipped to determine a career path that can motivate him better.
- Interests – this is the desire to pay personal attention to details. It is the factor that outlines the desires and gives a preference scale according to the order of priority. It has become obvious that people do very well in the areas in which they have an interest. Interest counts a lot when looking for a particular job because it is assumed that you will be able to perform to your satisfaction and contribute positively to society. Interest compels an individual to seek more knowledge and acquire new skills that will invariably grant him a distinguished position in the field and in society.
- Needs – this is the paradigm related to the study of the needs of society and emerging trends in the economy of nations, so that one feels motivated and challenged to pursue a career that allows them to provide goods and / or services to satisfy those needs as they arise. This model allows the creation of a Professional Identity or Niche.
- Petitions – It is important that intermittent studies are carried out to determine patterns of demand for goods / services. Having identified various societal needs so to speak, a thorough demand analysis and / or trend analysis is necessary from time to time to equip the student or prospective worker with relevant market statistics that will inform a good career choice.
- Future – When making a career choice, one should consider what the future holds for that particular job role (s). It’s generally safer to keep long-term maturing businesses in mind, despite the fact that short-term maturing businesses generally provide funds for day-to-day expenses. Speaking of the future, one must beware of unforeseen legislation and government tax policy that may not be favorable for certain disciplines or companies in the long term.
-
Utility – a good career must be highly advantageous and capable of serving useful or practical purposes. This beneficial impact should be positively visible in various aspects of social endeavors, especially to achieve:
- Your personal goals
- Your organizational goals
- Say the wishes of your local community.
- General national strategic objectives
- Learning – this term can simply refer to the acquisition of experience, knowledge or skill that will influence an almost permanent change in one’s behavior. Therefore, a good career should be able to present diverse learning opportunities for the individual. Learning opportunities are motivating, and organizations with a culture of training and retraining are more likely to attract a more experienced professional workforce than their competitors. Through continuous learning, you will be exposed to bodies of knowledge that will make you different from the rest of your peers, which will make you stand out from the crowd.
- Legacy – this to me is not just any word in the English dictionary, but rather a transformative seed sown for positive reasons that will ultimately perpetuate existence. According to the Chambers Dictionary, it is something given or left unfinished by a previous or predecessor owner. Therefore, a good career should give an individual the opportunity to leave behind something worthwhile for society, so that he / she is forever remembered by it. This is invariably a type of structure that must be in place to carry one beyond the borders of his realm.
- Produce – this is a function of the ability to produce a specific quantity of natural, artificial, material or financial products within a given time. Therefore, a good career must be able to produce the expected returns and / or significant dividends for the individual, the Organization and the Community.
For this reason, it is very important that the Student or Young person carry out a valid self-assessment in relation to the above in order to make a rational choice of career that will finally take them beyond the borders of their locality. For the Student of Onitsha-Ado, therefore, a valid self-assessment in line with the above will enable him to take up the right position in a career beyond the Kingdom of Onitsha.
2.2 A RACE BEYOND THE KINGDOM OF ONITSHA – As a consequence of the above, it can be stated with confidence that a career beyond the Kingdom of Onitsha is that career that will expose an individual to horizons outside the known prodigy of the Onitsha-Ado Monarchy because the career pattern has been consciously created to guarantee:
- Motivation
- Stimulus of interest
- needs satisfaction
- Request analysis
- Future relevance
- Utility
- Learning
- Legacy
- Produce
I want to take this opportunity to reiterate that choosing a good career rarely happens by accident, but rather by a complicated process of a consciously engaged paradigm. You are all sons and daughters of a great monarchy with more than six hundred years of outstanding position. Kindly do your best to keep the flag flying no matter the dangers or challenges.
3.0 CONCLUSION
In conclusion, you should consider this humble quote of mine:
“The dense, hazy cloud can temporarily blur a star’s spontaneous visibility
but in the end it must give way to the glorious glamor of its dazzling sparkle. “
Always remember, then, that you are a Star by birth and inheritance. So go ahead and show off the glorious glamor of your dazzling glitter with a career beyond the Kingdom of Onitsha.
Thank you.
