Jive Records is part of Sony BMG, one of the big four record labels. The Big Four are responsible for nearly eighty percent of all music produced and distributed in the United States. Signing to a big four record label, like Jive Records, is understandably a huge accomplishment for any musician. If you have a great voice and sing pop or soul, you might be lucky enough to be signed to Jive Records.
JR currently produces artists like Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and R. Kelly. If he wants to sign with Jive Recordings, his presentation must be as professional as theirs. You need to have a look that matches your voice, and you need to have a compact demo album. Lots of people are doing electronic press kits these days. Your demo CD also has all of your press clippings, biographical data, and photos stored electronically on the same disc. There is probably also a link to your website. Yes, today, if you want to sign with Jive Records, or any other major label, you need to have your own website.
Don’t start right away by sending your demo to JR
First you need to build a fan base. Start doing local concerts. If you’re a solo artist, look for piano bars, open mic nights, and even karaoke bars that you can sign up for. Use your website to advertise when you will sing. Hopefully you can find some musicians to join you. When your group is both compact and popular on the local scene, you should consider hiring a manager who can get you signed to an independent label and eventually get you signed to JR.
