There are a couple of things you need to understand about marketing in today’s world. If you can manage these few things, good things will happen.
Anyone can become a successful marketer
The more I look at online marketing, the more obvious it becomes that anyone can do this. Today’s world of online marketing is about being where people are and offering solutions to problems they may have.
Anyone can do this. Because we don’t have to know everything, we only need to be useful in the areas where we know something. The church refers to this as ministry. It is said that you cannot have a ministry without a wound. In other words, what the church teaches is that you minister to people who are going through the same hurts, habits, and complexes that you faced yourself.
In marketing we help other people who are looking for answers to problems that we already know something about.
Online marketing is not about neon
If you were to head to Six Street in Austin, TX, you would find all kinds of people who would want your business. There are people on the side of the street playing music. There is a girl dressed in a cowboy outfit doing a kind of dance in the middle of the street. There are bars lined up along the road with people hired to lure you in. There are tattoo parlors along with other companies that want you to come in and spend your money.
It is arguably the best interruption marketing.
However, when it comes to online marketing, we quickly learn that it is not about banners and moving parts. In fact, some of the most successful marketers I know have some of the worst-looking landing pages I’ve ever seen. They still use them for every new product they create.
Marketing is about research. Know what people are looking for. What answers people need to answer and provide them with something they did not yet know. That’s 80% of the work!
You don’t need all the answers
You only need THE ANSWER. That one answer to that one question. When you can create, market, and get that one answer in front of the people who need that answer, you’re in business.
We know it as niche marketing, others call it the long tail. But it is in the long tail that we want to hang out and market. We want to understand the long tail, live in the long tail, and make money off the long tail.
For example,
Father KW – dog training
Child KW – dog training basics
Child KW – dog training tools
- Grandchild KW – dog training collar
- Grandchild KW – dog training cage
- Grandchild KW – dog training whistle
Child KW – dog training classes
Child KW – home dog training
Child KW – dog training books / videos
Did you see how the dog training keyword skyrocketed into several long-tail keywords? That’s where you want to hang out. That’s where you want to be seen, on those long-tail keywords. It is for those who are looking for dog whistles, cages and collars that their products should be front and center.
You don’t need to be seen by the world, you only need to be seen by a few.
One is the loneliest number
The last thing to know about online marketing is that you don’t want to hang out in a niche. You want to expand those niches.
A very successful marketer has spent years building his business. The way he did it was through proper article marketing techniques and attacking one niche at a time. I would literally spend four months in one niche and then move on to the next. That’s all he did.
You need an action plan and method for discovering niches, plus a marketing plan that puts you in front of those who seek and search for the products and answers you have for those in that niche.
Once you do, things will start to change in your business.
