There are several options if you want to apply a garage floor treatment in order to seal and protect your floor. While the application of an acrylic garage floor coating may provide a great shine for a short time, it is not really strong enough to withstand vehicular traffic. Acrylic floor coverings are made to cover many different types of flooring, such as fired tile, vinyl, and even concrete, but are only designed for protection against light to medium foot traffic.
If you want to have complete protection for your garage floor and additional anti-slip attributes, your best option would be to apply a coat of epoxy which comes in two parts. Epoxy is an extremely strong and durable material that is made up of a resin and a hardener. If you want to get an idea of the hardness of epoxy floor covering, imagine fiberglass products like pleasure boats. They are epoxy—resin and hardener— applied over a woven mesh that is actually the structural support. The actual hardness of the casing is formed due to the chemical bond between the epoxy and the catalyst that is activated when the hardener is poured.
It is very easy to apply an epoxy garage floor coating and you only have to schedule it for a weekend as a DIY project because it only requires two half days of actual work. The first day is devoted to cleaning and degreasing the current floor surface. Begin these tasks by using a high quality degreasing product so that all or most of the oil residue is removed from the surface. Then you should use a detergent and a stiff broom to clean all the stains that the degreaser won’t remove. At this time, sprinkle water on the surface and see if the water forms droplets. If there are pearls, you need to degrease again and scrub this area more or else the epoxy won’t bond. Then you should let it dry overnight, using a space heater if possible.
The next day, start the project by mixing a large enough amount of epoxy so that you can cover no more than a 6′ by 6′ area and spread it out starting at the outermost corner of the door. Otherwise, you will literally be cornered. Spread the mixture with a hair roller and, after applying this batch, you should spread the non-slip material on the surface as if you were feeding the chickens. Keep repeating this step for each area until you cover the entire floor.
