So you’re thinking of moving to the Big Apple. New York is one of the most exciting places to live in the world with endless places to see, things to do, and interesting people to meet. But New York can also be expensive, and in general many of the rents in Manhattan are sky-high and rising. Searching for an apartment in New York can sometimes be a frustrating experience.
So what’s one to do if you want a piece of the Big Apple at a great price without resorting to subleasing and roommates? It takes a little ingenuity, a lot of planning and research, and even a little luck to find the perfect apartment in a great neighborhood, but it’s possible. Here are three ways to find an apartment in New York.
1. Look at the outer districts
Manhattan rents seem to be increasing by the day, but many places in the outer boroughs are overlooked. Check out the up and coming neighborhoods of Brooklyn, Queens and even the Bronx. Despite the image given to them in the movies, there are lovely and safe neighborhoods in many parts of these districts. Caroll Garden and Cobble Hill Brooklyn are great alternatives to pricey Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights.
Even Staten Island is a great budget alternative, and even though it’s a ferry ride away from all the action, it’s still a good choice for affordable housing.
Be sure to check the listings in local newspapers or on their websites. Visit these areas to make sure they are safe. Even if you don’t live in New York, you should plan a trip to the city so you can see the neighborhood firsthand and make a better decision.
2. Get out of town.
Cross the Hudson and venture into New Jersey, there are many affordable neighborhoods in and around Jersey City that are nice and safe. Hoboken is close enough to the city that travel times are reasonable. The area has many great finds waiting to be discovered by apartment hunters. Although it may not even be in the state of New York, Jersey City is the unofficial 6th district of New York.
3. Go online
If you want to live in Manhattan, log on to various free classified websites online and browse the listings. It’s amazing what you’ll find and what neighborhoods you’ll find them in. As always, please plan a site visit to check out the apartment and area.
It is possible to find the sun-drenched apartment you want at the price you want. With an open mind, a little research, and a little patience, you’ll find the perfect place.
