Health problems. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a mostly healthy dog, with a life expectancy of 14 years and sometimes longer. However, they are predisposed to some eye conditions, including glaucoma. The main problems with this breed are epilepsy and hypothyroidism. Skin and food allergies are also not uncommon. It is important to have this breed with the proper diet to avoid weight gain.
Cleanliness. Grooming is a reasonably easy task for the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen dog. A weekly brushing or combing will remove any residue from his coat. Care must be taken to keep the ears clean, in addition to trimming the nails and cleaning the teeth. The only other real consideration is keeping your paw hair neatly trimmed and bathing as needed, but not too often as this can destroy the natural oils in your coat.
Life conditions. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen can live virtually anywhere, including an apartment, as long as they exercise properly. It is an active dog and prefers a cooler climate, although it will also do well in a warm climate. When exercising, the dog should not let go of the leash, their hunting instincts are so strong that they will chase any small animals they see. Any other pet should be considered in the family home, as you do not want your child’s favorite rabbit to be presented to him after the dogs play. For this breed hunting is an instinct, there is no malice, but if you have smaller pets in the house, expect them to hunt them.
