Take a quick look around you while in any pharmacy and you’ll notice that the number of sinus irrigation products on the shelves has increased significantly in the last 10 years. There’s Ocean Nasal Spray, Neilmed, Simply Saline, and the list goes on. All this indicates that saline irrigation is an effective means of treating our nose. We wash our hands to get rid of germs. We shower to get rid of germs. We brush our teeth to get rid of germs. However, we let the inside of our nose rot as it gets dirtier and dirtier.
Ancient people seemed to understand the value of treating the nose with salt and water. Now we modern people seem to be taking notice too. Oprah Winfrey helped popularize nasal irrigation in 2007 when she had Dr. Mehmet Oz introduce the neti pot. A family friend, a nurse who works in a school district in the city, teaches her students how to use the neti pot, and with excellent results. Students rinse their noses and learn that this strategy not only cleanses their noses, but also that they need to “get out” a lot so they can stay infection free. And that is precisely what happens to them after watering.
Now I must give credit where credit is due: The physician who pioneered the concept of nasal irrigation in the United States is Dr. Murray Grossan of Los Angeles, California, an innovative otolaryngologist who created the sinus irrigation system. Grossan Hydro Pulse. , which has reportedly sold 400,000 to date.
I use Hydro Pulse twice a day, morning and night. The Hydro Pulse has clear advantages over other watering products such as a neti pot or bulb syringe (the latter can harbor bacteria):
1) The Hydro Pulse pulses in a rhythm to stimulate the nasal cilia at their natural rate, restoring cilia to function.
2) The Hydro Pulse allows you to irrigate both the nose and the throat. It is important to irrigate both, particularly since what is in the nose goes down the throat. Throat irrigation can bring circulation to the throat, which thins mucus and reduces postnasal drip.
Pulsatile irrigation is a simple, inexpensive, and effective way to clean the nose. Everyone should know and do it, whether they have a clean or dirty nose. We shower clean or dirty. And the results are that we are much cleaner and healthier after each shower. We should do the same with our nose.
Pulsatile irrigation is by far one of the best actions to ensure a good sinus health bill.
