The state of Assam is famous in the world for the quality of its tea. The natural beauty of the place coupled with a pleasant climate makes it one of the ideal places to grow tea. Assam malt-flavored beer is enjoyed all over the world. Here are some of the famous tea gardens (estates) in the state.
towkok
Located on the banks of the Towkak River, it is one of the most famous gardens in the state. Inhabited by a variety of wildlife and surrounded by the government forest reserve, Towkok is spread over a total area of more than 3,000 hectares. Divided into three different farms, it is known for producing the Orthodox variant during the first discharge. It has its own tram line and is well accessible by air, road and rail.
manjushree
The 403-hectare garden is near the town of Sonari in the Sibsagar district of Assam. A well-planned farm that produces different variants of the beer that is popular all over the world. The estate factory is known for its architectural beauty and picturesque view. Manjushree is well connected by roads and airports and is the recipient of the highest yield per hectare in Sibsagar district.
Mangalam
Known for its unique bush plantation, Mangalam produces orthodox and CTC teas that command a very high price in the market. The Orthodox variant is in great demand on the German market. Spread over 117 hectares, Mangalam is credited with reintroducing orthodox tea.
Nahorhabi
Named after the tree “Nahor”, the Nahorhabi estate extends over 650 hectares. It is one of the first gardens in Assam to receive ISO 9002 certification and is known for producing and marketing high quality CTC and traditional teas. The traditional process is the hallmark of this garden and the management carries out regular tree plantations to maintain the ecological balance. A dense forest covers one side of Nahorhabi.
Meleng
Meleng is one of the oldest gardens in Assam and was named after the Meleng River. Founded in 1852, Meleng is known for producing a golden tippy Orthodox beer with a rich malt flavor. More than 1700 workers work here and it has won many prestigious awards. Spread over 700 hectares, the gross yield of Meleng exceeds 1,500 kg per hectare.
Adequate rainfall and perfect humidity make the state one of the best places in the world for tea plantation. Every year the gardens produce tons of different varieties of teas that are exported to different parts of the world.
