It was a crisp Christmas Eve afternoon when we arranged to meet a breeder to see his last remaining Pomeranian puppy. The child’s future health or heartworm treatment and prevention never crossed my mind at this point, but it should have. This is one of the main considerations you should have if you are going to have a dog. Unfortunately, to keep it healthy, it is not enough to feed and love it.
Anyway, I had my heart set on a Yorkie and after looking at a couple of different litters and their parents, my husband felt that that breed of dog was too fragile. I didn’t argue too much because as soon as I saw the little Pomeranian hairball my heart melted and I was hooked. He looked at us with his little bug eyes and smiled. (Of course he didn’t actually smile … this was just my imagination.)
We took him home, made him a bed, and started him on his journey to become a member of the family. Our two oldest children were also in love. We all took turns holding him and smelling his puppy breath. After much consideration, we thought the Rambo name suited him well. After all, he seemed like a fighter and very willing to live up to his name.
Rambo has brought so much joy to our family. It is very much like one of the family members. I can’t even remember our life before he came to live with us. Visit the vet regularly for vaccinations and wellness checks. We usually send him to the groomer and give him the best dog food and treats.
All dogs should be tested for heartworm disease. These parasites can thrive in your dog’s body and eventually destroy it if left untreated. The test is fairly inexpensive and will save you from headaches and sadness in the long run.
