If you’ve just brought an older dog into your home, he may need to be housetrained. If the dog starts to go to the bathroom inside the house, this could be due to several reasons. Firstly, it could simply be that the dog has never been properly potty trained, and secondly, that he has been through some stressful circumstances in his life that have led him to go potty indoors. As such, you will have to train the dog yourself. Here are ways to train an older dog.
There are three times of the day when a dog usually goes to the bathroom. This will be in the morning when you first wake up, at night before they go to sleep, and 30 minutes to an hour after they’ve eaten. They will be, therefore, the moments in which you will have to be especially attentive to them going to the bathroom.
It is a good idea, therefore, to start taking the dog out at the times mentioned above. When you take the dog out and he is right to use the bathroom outside the house as he should, praise him by giving him a treat and patting him on the head.
When the dog is inside the house, make sure to contain it inside certain areas of the house and turn off all places, such as living rooms and bedrooms. You should also keep the animal in your sight at all times when you are around.
When you take your dog out and he’s not pooping or urinating like you might expect, it’s important to bring him back inside and then take him out again 20 to 30 minutes later.
It is also important to establish a feeding schedule for the animal. Feed them at regular times in the evening and in the morning if you wish. Be sure to stick to the schedule and remove the animal as above 30 minutes to an hour after each meal.
If the dog does end up getting in, then you should have some proper punishment methods ready to go. These should not be too hard, as this will not help anything. If you do these things, your dog should be housebroken in no time.
